Make vs Zapier: which is the better-value automation platform?

Make is the stronger fit when you want visual branching, a larger free usage allowance and lower published paid entry prices at the compared usage level. Zapier is the easier fit when you prefer its Zap workflow model and want Forms, Tables and its broader AI-orchestration toolkit under the same account. The usage units are different, so do not compare credits and tasks as if they were identical.

Lowest-risk buyer test

Automate the same real task in both free plans before paying

Pick one workflow you genuinely need—for example, capturing a form response, adding a row to a spreadsheet and sending a notification. Build the closest free version in each platform. Compare setup time, how clearly you can debug failures, and how quickly the workflow consumes its usage allowance. Upgrade only after the free limit blocks a workflow that already saves you time.

1. Build

Use the same business event and same destination apps.

2. Measure

Record how credits/tasks are consumed over several real runs.

3. Pay only if blocked

Choose the paid tier that removes an observed limitation.

Usage model matters more than the headline price

Make explains that a module action in a scenario generally counts as a credit. Zapier says workflow steps and external connector calls consume tasks, with some usage rates varying by action type. A multi-step workflow can therefore consume multiple units on either platform. For a fair comparison, price the exact workflow and monthly run count you expect rather than comparing 1,000 Make credits with 100 Zapier tasks directly.
